April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a nationally recognized and dedicated time to build awareness and resources for sexual assault survivors. As the Houston area’s designated rape crisis center, lead of the County’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), HAWC will continue advocating to establish a coordinated community response centering on the experiences of survivors. It is only by listening to the voices of survivors that we can deepen awareness and understanding of sexual assault and move toward real solutions and change.
DOUBLE YOUR GIFT:
HAWC is committed to factual information about sexual assault and the difficult process of healing for survivors. HAWC believes and supports survivors and wants to share these facts so we can have a better understanding and awareness.
- 8 out of 10 sexual assaults are committed by someone the survivor knows but criminal justice systems and general public perception are built on the myth that most attackers are strangers.
- Less than 10% of sexual assaults are ever reported. These crimes are underreported because survivors know their perpetrator which can increase feelings of fear, guilt, and shame.
- Sexual assault is prevalent. One third of adult Texans experience some form of sexual assault throughout their lifetime according to a 2015 Texas Statewide Prevalence Study.
- Solutions are at hand and healing is possible.
