Volunteer Opportunities at HAWC

Join a team of HAWC volunteers and watch our combined impact grow over time.  Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Houston Area Women’s Center! As an organization that was founded by volunteers, we at HAWC understand the vital role of volunteers in helping us to fulfill our mission to one day end domestic and sexual violence. Every year, dedicated community volunteers assist us with a myriad of activities and roles like:

 

  • Answering calls in the Crisis Hotline
  • Child Care Activities
  • Community Representative Volunteers
  • Helping with our Annual Special Events
  • Office and Administrative Support
  • Corporate & Group Volunteer special projects

 

The right volunteer role will depend on your comfort levels, skills, and availability. Working together, the Volunteer Department will assist in finding a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity for you at HAWC.

Volunteer Opportunities by Training and Commitment Levels:

Our procedures are in place to ensure a safe environment for our clients and staff, as well as our volunteers. Some volunteer positions have a distinct selection and training process, requiring you to attend follow-up staff interviews and complete required program training. For these trainings, volunteers must have been accepted as a volunteer by program staff and registered with the Volunteer Department.

High Training Commitment Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Crisis Hotline Volunteers- assist with crisis intervention, arrange shelter, give referrals, schedule counseling appointments, and provide an empathetic ear to callers.
          • Commitment: One 3-hour shift per week for a minimum of one year (shifts are only available Monday – Friday between the hours of 9:00am – 6:00pm)
          • Interview: Volunteers must by interviewed and accepted by Hotline staff
          • Training: Complete 54 hours of Crisis Intervention training, 24 hours of Hotline Observation training & attend Volunteer Orientation
Moderate Training Commitment Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Child Care Volunteers- Child Care volunteers, under supervision of staff, provide services to children ages infant to 5 years old. The volunteer’s primary responsibility is to create a safe, nurturing environment for our clients’ and residents’ young children. Shifts are available at our Administrative Offices & Residential Shelter.
          • Commitment: At least 2 shifts per month for a minimum of one year (shifts are available day, evening, and weekend)
          • Interview: Volunteers must by interviewed and accepted by Counseling staff
          • Training: Complete 7 hours of Child Care training & attend Volunteer Orientation
  • Office and Administrative Support: Office and Administrative support volunteers will help with supporting the day to day activities at the agency, such as filing and organizational needs. This position requires attention to detail.
          • Commitment: Commit to at least 2-3 shifts per month for a minimum of one year
          • Interview: No interview
          • Training: Attend Volunteer Orientation
Low to No Training Commitment Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Annual Special Events Volunteers- Annual Special Events Volunteers will help at annual events.
          • Events:
            • Race Against Violence (March- date TBA)
            • Back to School (August)
            • Holiday Gift Express (December) Please click here for the signup link.

          • Training: No training
          • Required Form: Conduct Form

Steps: How to Become a HAWC Volunteer?

Getting started as a new HAWC volunteer is a step-by-step process to ensure that each volunteer is properly oriented, matched, and trained. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background check. We offer Volunteer Orientations quarterly based on the available volunteer trainings offered throughout the year.

  • Step 1: Register and attend a new Volunteer Orientation (if applicable):
  • Step 2: Wait to receive a confirmation from our Volunteer Coordinator Dorian Dotson
  • Step 3: If required, an interview will be scheduled with the appropriate HAWC staff member (s)
  • Step 4: If required, complete applicable program training

Corporate & Group Volunteers

We welcome your association, company, or organization to volunteer in one of our annual special events or to coordinate a special one-day project that is unique to your group! To ensure proper approval and planning, please email volunteermanagement@hawc.org at least 1-2 months prior to your targeted date. Please keep in mind that while we do have occasional weekend opportunities, most of our projects are available Monday – Friday. All volunteers must be over the age of 18.
