At the close of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re reminded that this mission extends beyond October—it’s a daily commitment. The Houston Area Women’s Center works tirelessly to prevent violence and support survivors because one life is too many.
Your continued support fuels lasting change. Together we can continue raising awareness, supporting survivors, and creating a future free from fear and violence. Let’s carry the momentum forward, building a safer, stronger community every day.
Together, we’re saving lives.
OUR EFFORTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Throughout October we connected with countless individuals, organizations, and advocates to raise awareness and promote prevention efforts. Here are some highlights of what we achieved together:
Expanded our Survivor Speaks Campaign: Giving survivors of domestic violence a platform to share their stories. This initiative has helped to reduce stigma and raise awareness in our communities. It is through the courageous voices of survivors that we can truly revolutionize systems, protocols, and understandings to provide them with the compassionate and trauma-informed care they deserve.
Leadership Campaign: A million thanks to you! Because of your generous support, we raised $1.5 Million (and counting) in support of life saving services. This is the first time in HAWC history a million dollars was raised in Leadership Campaign! This transformational giving will impact the lives of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking.
A special thank you to our incredible co-chairs from the Yetter Coleman Law Firm: Connie Pfeiffer, Elizabeth Wayman, and Lilly Hann.
$100,000 Champion Level Sponsors:
Educational Workshops & Trainings: We hosted workshops in our community, focusing on recognizing the signs of domestic violence and providing resources for those in need. We connected with the community and sparked meaningful conversations.
Community Outreach Events: Our team participated in dozens of local events, distributing informational materials and connecting with community members. We shared stories of hope and resilience that resonated with many.
Our Violence Prevention Team collaborated with the East End Community in the Magnolia Park Dia De Los Muertos Celebration. HAWC honored Harris County victims who lost their lives to violence in 2023. You can read their stories in the 2023 Honoring Texas Victims Report from the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV).
Collaboration with Local Leaders: Welcoming community leaders and partner organizations to walk through the hallways of our new campus, One Safe Place, helps us amplify our message, convey our mission, and expand our reach. Together, we are creating a unified front against domestic violence.
Check out our Press Event with Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Congressman Al Green, and other local leaders to celebrate a pledge of $500k to support the renovation of our Crisis Response Center. We still need to raise $4.5M for this renovation and with the support of our community, we can continue to empower survivors and create One Safe Place for all of Houston and Harris County.
If you’re interested in making a donation towards One Safe Place or our Crisis Response Center, please reach out to Kathryn Sheppard at ksheppard@hawc.org.
