For many survivors of domestic violence, financial abuse is one of the greatest barriers to achieving lasting safety and independence.

Financial abuse is one of the most common forms of domestic violence. Abusers may control access to money, interfere with employment, prevent educational opportunities, damage credit, or create financial dependence. These tactics can make it difficult for survivors to leave an abusive relationship or rebuild their lives.

At Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC), we believe every survivor deserves the opportunity to achieve long-term financial security and economic independence.

HAWC’s Economic Empowerment Program is integrated into our survivor services and provides individualized support to help survivors build financial stability and work toward their personal, educational, and career goals.

Services may include:

• Individual financial coaching
• Financial education and skill-building workshops
• Employment and career development services
• Resume preparation and interview coaching
• Educational planning and workforce training referrals
• Matched savings opportunities (when available)
• Connections to community resources that support long-term financial stability

Our trauma-informed approach recognizes each survivor’s unique strengths, goals, and circumstances. Whether someone is preparing for employment, improving financial skills, returning to school, or working toward greater financial independence, our team provides guidance and support every step of the way.
