Volunteer Opportunities at HAWC


Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Houston Area Women’s Center! As an organization that was founded by volunteers, we at HAWC understand the vital role of volunteers in helping us to fulfil our mission to one day end domestic and sexual violence. Every year, dedicated community volunteers assist us with a myriad of activities and roles like:



The right volunteer role will depend on your comfort levels, skills, and availability. Working together, the Volunteer Department will assist in finding a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity for you at HAWC.


Steps to Becoming a HAWC Volunteer


Getting started as a new HAWC volunteer is a step-by-step process to ensure that each volunteer is properly oriented, matched, and trained. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background check. We offer Volunteer Orientations throughout the year to coincide with our program trainings for volunteers.



Special Requirements & Program Training

Our procedures are in place to ensure a safe environment for our clients and staff, as well as our volunteers. Some volunteer positions have a distinct selection and training process, requiring you to attend follow-up staff interviews and complete required program training. For these trainings, volunteers must have been accepted as a volunteer by program staff and registered with the Volunteer Department.


Crisis Hotline Volunteers

Crisis Hotline volunteers assist with crisis intervention, arrange shelter, give referrals, schedule counseling appointments, and provide an empathetic ear to callers.


  • Commitment level: high
  • Shifts are only available Monday – Friday between the hours of 9:00am – 6:00pm
  • Commit to one 3-hour shift per week for a minimum of one year
  • Volunteers must by interviewed and accepted by Hotline staff
  • Complete 54 hours of Crisis Intervention training
  • Complete 24 hours of Hotline Observation training


Child Care Volunteers

Child Care volunteers, under supervision of staff, provide services to children ages infant to 5 years old. The volunteer’s primary responsibility is to create a safe, nurturing environment for our clients’ and residents’ young children. Shifts are available at our Administrative Offices & Residential Shelter.


  • Commitment level: high
  • Shifts are available day, evening, and weekend
  • Commit to at least two shifts per month for a minimum of one year
  • Volunteers must by interviewed and accepted by Counseling staff
  • Complete 7 hours of Child Care training


Community Representative Volunteers (CRV)

CRVs help raise awareness about HAWC’s mission, programs, and events by attending and/or speaking at community events throughout the greater Houston area.


  • Commitment level: medium
  • Shifts available as we receive inquiries from community partners
  • Commit to at least one shift per month for a minimum of one year
  • Volunteers must by interviewed and accepted by Marketing & Communication staff
  • Complete 7 hours of CRV training



Corporate & Group Volunteer Requests

We receive inquiries from associations, companies, and community members who want to donate their professional services, specialties, or time to HAWC & our clients. If you’re interested in providing a service, teaching a class, or helping with an event, please complete our ​Corporate & Group Volunteer interest form. To ensure proper approval and planning, please complete the form at least 1-2 months prior to your targeted date. Please keep in mind that while we do have occasional weekend opportunities, most of our projects are available Monday – Friday. All requests must go through the Volunteer Department and are subject to approval by HAWC staff.
