The Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Congressman and former Mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner. As a native Houstonian, he was a dedicated leader, passionate advocate and steadfast supporter of HAWC, our mission and our city.
During his time in public service, Congressman Turner fought to create safer, healthier communities for all, notably through initiatives like the Domestic Violence and Crisis Intervention Response Initiative. He was a devoted ally in the fight against domestic violence, investing millions to support survivors and provide crucial resources for those in need. Turner was instrumental in securing the $15M funding from the city needed for HAWC to bring One Safe Place to life.
Congressman Turner’s legacy as an advocate for survivors of domestic violence and his deep commitment to our city will never be forgotten. As he once said, “I am so proud of our relationship with HAWC and other providers in this space. They are what I call the front-line responders. They’re the ones when people want out, they can provide them with advice, the right information on how to leave safely. The reality is, the dollars that you give today can benefit your daughter, your sister, your son because you just don’t know.”
His understanding of the impacts of domestic and sexual violence and publicly advocating for awareness is how real change is made. We thank Congressman Turner for championing change, standing alongside HAWC, and his love for community.
We are grateful for his leadership, compassion, and dedication to making Houston a better place for all. His work continues to inspire and empower and we will carry forward his commitment to ending violence for all.
