Every year, March provides us with a moment to honor the incredible achievements and contributions of women from all walks of life. This International Women’s Day, as we reflect on the journey of the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC), we take a moment to thank the women who have spoken fiercely, worked tirelessly and broken barriers to create a better world for the generations that follow.

In 1977, a small group of volunteers, with nothing more than a few borrowed phones, began answering calls from women in Houston seeking refuge from abuse. From those humble beginnings, the Houston Area Women’s Center has grown into a vital pillar of support, empowering survivors of violence. We remain as committed as ever to providing safety, education, and free resources by working tirelessly to break the cycle of abuse and create lasting change.

For survivors of domestic violence, the largest barrier to leaving and achieving self-sufficiency is financial insecurity. 99% of domestic violence survivors experience some form of financial abuse. At the Houston Area Women’s Center, we empower survivors to reclaim their independence.

Each year, hundreds of survivors participate in our Economic Empowerment program, providing Financial Empowerment and Career Development support at our Flagship Campus and Survivor Empowerment Hubs across Houston.

Empowered women, empower change. Your support makes it all possible.

SUPPORT SURVIVORS

Together, we can continue to empower women, break the chains of abuse and create a future free from violence. Let’s unite, stand strong, and march forward toward a world where every woman can live without fear.
