Urgent and Ongoing Needs

UPDATE:

Because of the closure of our Counseling and Education campus, and out of an abundance of caution for both our staff and our clients as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, we have temporarily suspended donations normally accepted below.

Our GREATEST NEED at this time is your financial support.  Please help us as we continue to provide lifesaving services to the women, children and clients we support both at our shelter and through our virtual support services including hotlines, hospital accompaniment, counseling, children’s court services, legal advocacy, violence prevention and housing.

We hope you will consider making a donation during this critical time.

Donations may be dropped off Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and Saturday 9am-5pm at our 1010 Waugh location.

In order for us to accommodate large scale donations, please call 713-528-6798 in advance to coordinate a drop off time.

Help us help survivors we comfort at the hospital.

Our current most urgent needs are:

  • New, still tagged  women’s yoga or stretch cotton pants
  • New, still tagged men’s athletic pants and shorts
  • New, still tagged t-shirts,
  • New, still tagged sports bras, underwear, and socks of ALL SIZES

Often, survivors have to leave everything behind, and we need to get them comfortable, clean clothes quickly, whether from their homes or the hospital. We can only accept new items with the tags still attached and unexpired food. If you’d prefer to organize a DRIVE for these urgent items, please email info@hawc.org.

For questions please reach out to Sara Rehman, Development Coordinator, at 713-528-6798 Ext. 2229 or srehman@hawc.org.

Please note: We cannot accept used donation items

Because of limited staff and space resources, we do not have the ability to sort, store and clean and sanitize previously-worn clothing, used toys and other used donated items.

We also are unable to accept and process older computers, tablets, cell phones and other electronic devices.

For this reason, financial donations provide us with the best way to match and meet the ongoing – and often changing – needs of our clients.

There are also certain new items that we can accept at certain times of the year.  For instance, during our annual Back To School Drive, we collect new school supplies and backpacks for our clients’ children, and during our annual Holiday Gift Express, we collect gift cards and new toys.

If you would like to host a fundraising event benefitting the Houston Area Women’s Center and use the Houston Area Women’s Center logo on your promotional materials, please visit our Community Partner Events page for guidelines and to fill out the Community Partner Event form.

FAQ

BESIDES YOUR TWO ANNUAL DRIVES, UNDER WHAT OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU ACCEPT NEW ITEMS?

We often have very specific or urgent needs that are met through community drives.  These drives help us fulfill our need for items like diapers (especially larger sizes), bras and underwear, and regular-sized toiletries.  If you are interested in organizing a drive to meet these types of needs, or have an idea for a drive you’d like to discuss with us, please contact the Development Department at 713-630-2211 or info@hawc.org.

CAN YOU ACCEPT BABY ITEMS LIKE CAR SEATS, CRIBS AND STROLLERS?

By law, we cannot accept these items, but can accept monetary donations to fulfill the need for them.

CAN YOU ACCEPT ELECTRONICS LIKE TABLETS, COMPUTERS, AND PHONES?

We accept gently used electronics no more than 2 years old. Older electronic devices cannot be used and cost us money to have recycled.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER ITEMS FOR CHILDREN, LIKE TOYS?

We can only accept new toys in their original packaging.  By law, we cannot accept used toys or stuffed animals.

SINCE YOU DON’T ACCEPT NON-URGENT CLOTHING DONATION, WHERE CAN I DONATE MY USED CLOTHES?

There was a time, several years ago, when the Houston Area Women’s Center operated a resale shop.  We no longer have that shop, nor do we have the capacity to process clothing donations.  However, below are some local organizations that have the ability to collect donated clothing.  These organizations also serve our clients:

Assistance League of Houston

Fort Bend Women’s Center PennyWise Resale Store

Goodwill Industries

The Salvation Army

Star of Hope

The Women’s Home

Dress for Success
