INTERNING AT THE HOUSTON AREA WOMEN'S CENTER

 

OVERVIEW

The Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) offers several challenging unpaid internships throughout the academic year. The internships at HAWC have been designed to provide selected individuals with hands-on experience to help them prepare to launch a career in social services.

 

The selection process is highly competitive and qualified applicants will have to go through an interview process. If accepted, we do provide training that is required. In some cases, hours in training can go towards required intern hours.

 

HAWC offers different intern opportunities that may satisfy the requirements of several degree programs including: Law School, MSW and Graduate Level Counseling.  Internship opportunities are also available for those in an undergraduate degree programs.

Please note: If you do not require the minimum hours required for the below internships then volunteer hours may be available. Volunteer opportunities and application can be found under the volunteer link on the Houston Area Women's Center website.

 

  • NON-RESIDENTIAL COUNSELING & ADVOCACY INTERNSHIPS

    Licensed Professional Counseling Interns

    OVERVIEW

    Interns provide individual counseling to adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence from a feminist/empowerment perspective. Opportunities to provide group counseling as well as opportunities to work with children and adolescents may also be available, but will depend on primary needs of the program.

     

    In addition, the LPC-Intern's supervisor will be screened to assess their experience working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and their philosophy of supervision.  These internships are unpaid, and the agency is unable to pay for any portion of the LPC-Intern's supervision.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Proof of graduation from an accredited master's program in counseling with a focus on mental health of community counseling. School counselor concentration LPC-Interns need not apply.
    • Proof of passing score on National Counselor Exam
    • Proven ability to work with clients in a client-centered, non-judgmental manner
    • Practicum reference and employment references will be contact as part of the application consideration

    TRAINING

    • Complete crisis intervention training - all dates required (see training below)

     

    *We are unable to accommodate LMFT requests as we do not provide couples, marriage, or formal family counseling.

     

     

  • CHILDREN'S COURT SERVICES/ LEGAL ADVOCACY INTERNSHIP
  • CHILD CARE INTERNSHIP
  • HOTLINE INTERNSHIP
  • DATABASE ADMINISTRATION INTERNSHIP
  • RESIDENTIAL ADVOCATE INTERNSHIP

 

 

TRAININGS

 

CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING: an intensive three (3) week fifty-four (54) hour training. Training is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday during the 3 week period.

 

The next Crisis Interventions Training is January 19, 2018 - February 8, 2018 (See Attached)

Crisis Intervention Training Schedule

 

CHILD CARE TRAINING: an 8 hour training required. Prepares interns to work with children who are survivors or witnesses to family violence.

HOW TO APPLY

To be considered for an internship, please complete the Intern Application with attached background check form. A background check will only be run on those applicants that go through the interview process.
