INTERNING AT THE HOUSTON AREA WOMEN'S CENTER

 

OVERVIEW

The Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) offers several challenging unpaid internships throughout the academic year. The internships at HAWC have been designed to provide selected individuals with hands-on experience to help them prepare to launch a career in social services.

 

The selection process is highly competitive and qualified applicants will have to go through an interview process. If accepted, we do provide training that is required. In some cases, hours in training can go towards required intern hours.

 

HAWC offers different intern opportunities that may satisfy the requirements of several degree programs including: Law School, MSW and Graduate Level Counseling.  Internship opportunities are also available for those in an undergraduate degree programs.

  • NON-RESIDENTIAL COUNSELING & ADVOCACY INTERNSHIPS
  • CHILDREN'S COURT SERVICES/ LEGAL ADVOCACY INTERNSHIP

    OVERVIEW

    Interns enhance and expand our capacity to serve clients by tracking and monitoring cases at various stages of the criminal justice system, providing support to staff by updating cases and computer records, assisting with client correspondence, assisting with program evaluation and researching legal issues. Interns will have the opportunity to observe the workings of the Criminal Justice System in cases involving children as victims and witnesses.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Minimum of 160 hours
    • Law Students - minimum 20hr/week
    • Undergraduates - minimum 10hr/ week
    • Good Computer Skills
    • Bilingual helpful, but not required
    • Reliable Transportation
    • Hours must be scheduled between 8am - 6pm
    • Undergrad majors: Criminal Justice, Sociology, Paralegal, etc.
    • Law School: Summer session between 1st and 2nd year only.

    TRAINING

    Complete 3 hours SA/DV 101

     

    OVERVIEW

    Provide legal information, advocacy and referrals to clients of the Houston Area Women's Center. Weekday, daytime hours available to coordinate with Court hours.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Law school: 2nd to 3rd year interested in working with a legal aid attorney in legal clinics, advocacy, and       research
    • Knowledge of community resources for survivors of domestic and sexual violence
    • Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to child abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, liability and                   negligence
    • Familiarity with legal services, resources, and procedures available to victims
  • CHILD CARE INTERNSHIP
  • HOTLINE INTERNSHIP
  • DATABASE ADMINISTRATION INTERNSHIP
  • RESIDENTIAL ADVOCATE INTERNSHIP

 

 

TRAININGS

 

CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING: an intensive three (3) week fifty-four (54) hour training. Training is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday during the 3 week period.

 

The next Crisis Interventions Training is January 19, 2018 - February 8, 2018 (See Attached)

Crisis Intervention Training Schedule

 

CHILD CARE TRAINING: an 8 hour training required. Prepares interns to work with children who are survivors or witnesses to family violence.

HOW TO APPLY

To be considered for an internship, please complete the Intern Application with attached background check form. A background check will only be run on those applicants that go through the interview process.
